What we collect

Every waste stream, one collection round

Most City businesses need two to four streams. We collect them together so you deal with one supplier and one invoice.

General waste

Everything that can’t be recycled, collected in bags or bins as often as you need. Sorted again at the transfer station so less goes to landfill.

Dry mixed recycling

Paper, card, cans, plastic bottles and pots together. Simple for staff, and it meets the Simpler Recycling dry recycling requirement.

Food waste

Kitchen, café and staff-room food waste, collected frequently enough that it never smells. Required for workplaces with 10+ staff.

Glass

Bottle and jar collections for bars, restaurants and offices that host events. Kept separate so it can be recycled cleanly.

Cardboard

Flattened boxes from deliveries and retail stock, collected with your recycling or on their own if you produce a lot.

Electricals (WEEE)

Old monitors, PCs, kettles and phones handled as WEEE. Never mixed into general waste.

Recycling & WEEE

Simpler Recycling: what City businesses must do now

Since 31 March 2025, workplaces in England with 10 or more full-time-equivalent staff must keep dry recycling (paper and card, plastic, metal and glass) and food waste separate from general waste and have them collected separately. Micro-firms with fewer than 10 staff have until 31 March 2027.

We set up separate streams, label the bins with you and give you the paperwork to show it. Read our plain-English guide.

How a JWL contract works

Collections planned around the City, not a depot timetable

City buildings run on rules: loading bay slots, goods lift bookings, no bags on the pavement during the day. When you ask for a quote we ask about all of that, then plan your collection around it.

You get a fixed price per collection for each stream. If you produce more one week, say after an event or a refit, tell us and we’ll add an extra collection. If you produce less, we can reduce the frequency.

  • Bags or binsWe work with your existing bin store or advise on the right bin sizes for your volumes.
  • Flexible frequencyDaily, several times a week, weekly or on call. Change it as your business changes.
  • Records for auditsWaste transfer notes and recycling information you can use for ESG and sustainability reports.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Do I have to use the council for commercial waste?

No. Businesses can choose any registered waste carrier. What you must do is use a licensed carrier, keep your waste secure and keep waste transfer notes for every collection.

What is a waste transfer note and how long do I keep it?

It’s the document that records who took your waste, what it was and where it went. You must keep them for at least two years. We provide one for every job. Our guide to waste transfer notes explains more.

Do the Simpler Recycling rules apply to my business?

If you have 10 or more full-time-equivalent employees, yes, since 31 March 2025. You need dry recycling and food waste collected separately from general waste. Smaller businesses must comply from 31 March 2027.

How is the price worked out?

By volume, frequency and the number of waste streams. We quote a fixed price per collection, so your monthly cost is predictable.

Can you collect early in the morning or in the evening?

Tell us your building’s time windows and loading arrangements when you ask for a quote and we’ll schedule around them wherever we can.

Do you collect hazardous waste?

Not on general collections. Electricals (WEEE) are handled separately. For anything else hazardous, such as chemicals or asbestos, ask us and we’ll point you to the right licensed specialist.
